John P. Hutton diary and papers, 1856-1863.

Manuscript diary of John P. Hutton, Company B, 1st Regiment Oregon Volunteer Cavalry at Fort Walla Walla, 1862 Dec. 10-1863 Jan. 28. Titled by Hutton "Journal of a soldier's life, Vol. II," the diary is written in a standard diary volume titled "The tender thought" and published by Leavitt and Allen, New York. Includes details of daily life, military actions against Native Americans, weather, and quotations from literature. Tipped in at front is photograph of Hutton in uniform. contain: typescript copy of a letter from Hutton to Amanda Crandall, 1856 Apr. 19, from Camp Crandall, including description of the death of Absolom J. Hembree; photostatic copy of a letter from James Hutton and/or John P. Hutton from Camp Cornelius, 1856 Feb. 27; autograph letter from Melvin L. Hutton to his uncle James C. Hutton, from Jacksonville, Oregon, 1857 Nov. 20; and certificate of appointment of John P. Hutton to Duty Sergeant, 1862 Dec. 22, with notations by Hutton on verso.
